Frequently Asked Questions
Q:
To where can I backup my data?
A:
There are 3 types of Destinations that you can mix and match to your needs:
- Local Folder: This can be an attached USB/FireWire drive or a mountable Network Disk; anything that is visible on the local system can be used to store your backup data.
- Computer: Backup to another one of your computers; your spouse, your friend or your own local server. Backing your machine up to these devices is free.
- Online: Your data is stored on our secure servers in our secure datacenter.
Q:
Is my data safe on your server?
A:
Your data is very secure with DFW DataVault:
- Encryption: Before your data ever leaves your computer, it is compressed and then encrypted with a (448-bit cipher).
You will also want to set a private data password for your encryption for an extra layer of protection. - Physical Access: Our datacenter is in a Class 1 facility with Armed Security, multiple biometric access points and layers of coded entry.
- Storage: All of our datacenter systems use industry standard redundancy measures to make sure we do not lose our copy of your data. We also perform regular backups of your backup!
Q:
How can be assured my backup data is valid?
A:
- Integrity of your backup is checked at least once a day by a process that analyzes and grooms the stored data files. If any of the data is found to be damaged or an invalid checksum is detected, the software will repoll your system and rebackup that piece of data.
- The technology was developed from the standpoint that hardware fails and that it should not be trusted at any level. The stored backups of your data are maintained and checked and "healed" when any fault is found. This approach ensures that when you go to restore your backup it's integrity is never in question.
Q:
How can I backup the desktops and server at my office?
A:
- Simply install our software on whatever systems you wish to backup data from and our software will take care of the rest. If you want to have your data backed up and protected sooner than it will normally take to perform the initial backup, arrange a pre-load service with a DFW DataVault representative.
- We can also arrange installation of a local backup system that is linked with our offsite systems to ensure you have a local and offsite copy of your valuable business data.
Q:
What do you recommend for backing our business data?
A:
- At the minimum, we recommend for any business to make sure their data is backed up offsite. Using our intelligent software, you can be assured that the backups will happen. Too often businesses rely on their own personnel to manually perform backup tasks. This is only a small step above not backing up at all as we are all fallible and not 100% reliable.
- Designing up with a Data Protection Plan is essential to business continuity and is easier than it sounds. Primarily you perform a simple survey of your computing systems, make a list of the data stored on those systems and prioritize the importance of retaining that data in case of loss.

Q:
How do I control how much bandwidth is used for transferring backup data?
A:
Bandwidth utilization is controlled in 3 ways:
- Scheduling: You can control when your backups occur. Late at night while you are asleep; during the day while you are at work. It is up to you.
- Max data rates: SCREENSHOT POPUP HERE - You can set maximum data rates for the backup software to use both while you are using the computer and while you are away.
- Quality of Service: If you have a modern router that understands packet prioritization QOS DIAGRAM POPUP HERE you can set the quality of service "tag" that will be applied to your backup data and your router can use its own settings for optimizing your internet connection's available bandwidth.
Q:
How do I get started?
A:
- Determine the number of computers that will have their data backed up. This is the number of seats you will need for service.
- Use our order form to sign up for an account. If you intend to take advantage of our Pre-Loading feature, be sure to add that service package as well.
- Download the software to the computers that will be used as a backup data source or destination. We only charge for backup sources, not destinations.
- Check your email for your registration key and account information.
- Install the software using the information from that email.
- Start your Backup, or if you will be using our pre-load service, follow the instructions to complete your backups faster!
